Our youngest learners had a fantastic week in Mrs. Lasater’s kindergarten class! They worked hard to learn classroom and school expectations — and they’re already shining! 🌈📚
During free choice time, these bright little stars practiced so many important social skills, including:
🤝 Sharing & Taking Turns
💬 Communication & Language Development
😊 Kindness & Friendship
🧠 Self-Control & Problem Solving
🎨 Creativity & Cooperation
We’re so proud of the incredible growth we’re already seeing. Way to go, kindergarteners! 💙

Mrs. Conery’s kindergarteners kicked off the year by reading Our Class is a Family and making friendship bracelets to celebrate kindness, respect, and caring for one another. 💙 #KnightPride

Hello! My name is Maria Nocerini and I am beyond excited to join Norway Vulcan Area Schools as the new speech therapist! I earned my bachelor of science in communication sciences and disorders at Northern Michigan University then continued my education at the University of Wisconsin - Stevens Point where I obtained my master of science degree in communication sciences and disorders - speech language pathology. When I am not at the school you could most likely find me outdoors walking or playing with my 14 week old puppy, Murphy, alongside my husband, Daniel. I get joy from being around my family and friends, whether we are gathering for dinner, out ice fishing, boating, or heading to the gym to watch cousins play their sports. I look forward to the year ahead of us and to the learning and growth that will occur. I cannot wait to meet all of the smiling faces that walk through my door!

My name is Brad Perry, and I am excited to introduce myself as a new 6th grade teacher at Norway Elementary School. I am a proud graduate of this district and it means so much to me to now serve the students and families of the community where I grew up. Over the past 5 years, I’ve worked in education as a teacher, coach, and administrator, and I’m thrilled to step into this role in the classroom. I earned my Master’s in Elementary Education from Marian University, and I’m passionate about helping students succeed by creating a safe, supportive, and challenging environment.
My wife (also a Norway graduate) and I have been married for 12 years, and our two sons both attend Norway Elementary. As a family, we love traveling, sports, and attending live games and concerts. One of our big goals is to visit every Major League Baseball park before my youngest graduates from high school and we have currently attended 18 of the 30 MLB Ballparks. I’m truly grateful for the chance to give back to the community that gave so much to me, and I’m looking forward to a great school year with our 6th graders.

Hey, Knights Community! I’m Taylor Huotari, and this upcoming year will be my seventh in a classroom. I’ll be teaching 7th grade, 9th grade, and 10th grade social studies classes, as well as coaching cross country. I’m a born and raised Yooper, growing up and graduating from Iron Mountain High School, and then earning my teaching degree in secondary Social Studies and English education from Northern Michigan University. When I’m not teaching, I enjoy lifting weights, running, listening and playing music, and attending concerts. I’m ecstatic to be given a chance to teach in this district and be a part of the community. Go, Knights!

Dear families,
We are looking forward to a great school year, with students in classes and ready to learn every day.
We have learned that students who miss even a few days of school each month are at a greater risk of academic failure and dropping out than students who attend regularly. We have set a goal that every student in our school attends regularly (has nine or fewer absences in a year).
Because attendance is so important, please send your student to school every day unless he or she has a contagious illness or is running a fever.
We have included a chart with this letter that will help you keep track of your student’s absences. If your student is at risk of missing too much school, please feel free to contact Mr. Tony Mendina (Norway-Vulcan Elementary School Principal) at 906-563-9543 or Mr. Tony Adams (Norway Jr / Sr High School Principal) at 906-563-9542 for assistance. We will also monitor each student’s attendance across the year so we can work with families when the number of absences puts a student at risk. We will be happy to work with you to help your students attend regularly and have greater opportunities for success.
Sincerely,
Mr. Bruce Tapio - NVAS Superintendent
Mr. Tony Mendina - Norway-Vulcan Elementary School Principal
Mr. Tony Adams - Norway Jr / Sr High School Principal

👋 Say hello to another one of our newest team members—Katie Gude! We’re thrilled to have her join our team this year. Take a moment to hear what Ms. Gude has to share!
Hi, my name is Katie Gude and I am very excited to teach 3rd grade at Norway-Vulcan Area Schools this year! I graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 2008. I received my Masters Degree in Special Education in 2023 from Emporia State University. This will be my 18th year of teaching. I previously taught in Idaho and Kansas. I am originally from Kingsford and I’m excited and grateful to be back home in the UP! In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, crocheting, and traveling. I’m looking forward to meeting my students and watching them learn and grow this school year.

Hello, I am Kyle Mcgillviray, I am extremely excited to teach Jr./Sr. high school science at Norway-Vulcan Area Schools. I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a degree in Wildlife Ecology- Resource and Management while also minoring in Biology. While new to teaching, I have spent the last decade in the natural resources field conducting real world scientific applications. My passion for science and natural resources motivates me to teach the next generation of scientists. I am native to the Upper Peninsula, and love spending much of my time in the outdoors hunting, fishing, camping, and hiking. I am looking forward to helping students explore science, invoke curiosity, and show how wonderful our natural world is! Go Knights!
