Dear families,
We are looking forward to a great school year, with students in classes and ready to learn every day.
We have learned that students who miss even a few days of school each month are at a greater risk of academic failure and dropping out than students who attend regularly. We have set a goal that every student in our school attends regularly (has nine or fewer absences in a year).
Because attendance is so important, please send your student to school every day unless he or she has a contagious illness or is running a fever.
We have included a chart with this letter that will help you keep track of your student’s absences. If your student is at risk of missing too much school, please feel free to contact Mr. Tony Mendina (Norway-Vulcan Elementary School Principal) at 906-563-9543 or Mr. Tony Adams (Norway Jr / Sr High School Principal) at 906-563-9542 for assistance. We will also monitor each student’s attendance across the year so we can work with families when the number of absences puts a student at risk. We will be happy to work with you to help your students attend regularly and have greater opportunities for success.

Hi, my name is Katie Gude and I am very excited to teach 3rd grade at Norway-Vulcan Area Schools this year! I graduated from Eastern Michigan University with a Bachelor’s Degree in Elementary Education in 2008. I received my Masters Degree in Special Education in 2023 from Emporia State University. This will be my 18th year of teaching. I previously taught in Idaho and Kansas. I am originally from Kingsford and I’m excited and grateful to be back home in the UP! In my free time I enjoy spending time with my family, reading, crocheting, and traveling. I’m looking forward to meeting my students and watching them learn and grow this school year.

✨ New Classroom Furniture – Deliveries are rolling in, and spaces are taking shape for an exciting year ahead!
✨ Fresh Setups – A sneak peek inside a few classrooms already looking ready for students.
We can’t wait for everyone to see the finished results when school starts back up. Big thanks to our maintenance and facilities teams for all their hard work this summer!

High School yearbooks that have been paid for are available for pick up in the Superintendent's office during summer business hours. There are also a limited number of books available for purchase for $75 each.
